Obama’s War
Watching this preview to the upcoming Frontline series is a sobering reminder that the price of war is still paid in blood.
This is truly a war for the postmodern era. We send young men with guns and bombs to make friends with local shopkeepers while politicians decide how to define and win a war against an army our soldiers cannot see on a battlefield with no boundaries so that our nation plagued with internal crime and violence can feel safe from terror.
The official 9/11 death toll is 2,751.
Since 9/11, my city of Philadelphia has suffered more than 2,700 homicides. Nationwide, we’ve seen more than 116,000. We put our troops in harms way in Iraq and Afghanistan and 4,349 have not returned. We are our own worst enemy.
I played Jackson Browne’s song Lives in the Balance (video below) for weeks leading up to “Shock and Awe.” All these years later, it’s troubling to see this video which shows that perhaps only one thing is clear: Our soldiers and the local people didn’t start these wars but their lives lay in the balance.
